Traveling with Your Pet from the USA to South Korea: Rabies Titer Test & Health Certificate Guide

Updated: May 8

Planning international travel with your dog or cat can feel overwhelming, especially when traveling to South Korea. At Vermont Animal Hospital in Los Angeles, we help pet owners prepare the required documents, rabies titer testing, and USDA-endorsed health certificates for smooth international travel.

If you are preparing to fly with your pet from the USA to South Korea, here is a simple step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Rabies Vaccination

Your pet must have a valid rabies vaccination before international travel.

Important points:

  • The microchip should ideally be implanted before the rabies vaccine

  • Keep all rabies vaccination certificates

  • Make sure the vaccine is current and not expired

For puppies and kittens receiving their first rabies vaccine, additional waiting periods may apply.

Step 2: Rabies Titer Test (FAVN Test)

After the rabies vaccination, your pet will need a rabies antibody titer test (FAVN test) for entry into South Korea.

When should the blood sample be collected?

We recommend waiting approximately 3 weeks after the rabies vaccine before drawing the blood sample.

This allows enough time for the immune system to develop protective antibody levels.

Where is the test performed?

Common laboratories include:

  • Kansas State University Rabies Laboratory

    • Typical turnaround time: around 3 weeks

  • Auburn University Virology Laboratory

    • Typical turnaround time: around 5 weeks in some cases

    • Expedited processing may return results in approximately 2 weeks depending on laboratory volume and shipping

Because processing times can vary, we strongly recommend planning your pet’s travel several months in advance.

Step 3: International Health Certificate

The final health examination should be completed within 10 days of your flight date.

During the appointment, we:

  • Perform a physical examination

  • Review vaccination and titer documents

  • Verify microchip information

  • Prepare the international health certificate paperwork

USDA Endorsement Through VEHCS

After the examination, the health certificate is submitted electronically to the USDA through the VEHCS system.

The USDA then endorses the documents required for international travel.

Once endorsed:

  • The original hard copy is mailed back to the veterinary clinic

  • Typical delivery time is approximately 5–8 days

Because mailing and endorsement times can vary, we recommend avoiding last-minute travel preparation.

Planning Ahead Is Important

International pet travel to South Korea requires careful timing and organization.

A typical timeline may look like this:

  1. Rabies vaccination

  2. Wait about 3 weeks

  3. Rabies titer blood test

  4. Wait for laboratory results

  5. Schedule health certificate exam within 10 days of flight

  6. USDA endorsement and document return

Starting early helps avoid delays and reduces travel stress for both pets and owners.
